We believe the time is ripe to launch an ‘EarthCare Design Centre' in India. We envision this as a socio-cultural, spiritual, and technologically innovative space. It will support the design that is viable for individuals, empowering for communities and regenerative for nature. These designs will conserve energy resources, build upon the wisdom of earth-based communities, and ensure healthy livelihoods. In partnership with local organizations, the Centre will generate design related products, systems and technologies, promote dialogue and learning, and engage with ecological experiments.
We will prioritize human-scale efforts, which operate on free and abundant natural resources, like solar and muscle energy and human creativity. At the heart of this enterprise is the development of leadership that will guide India's marginalised communities towards unity, justice and reconnection among people and between people and the natural world.
The EarthCare Design Centre will promote 'liberation technologies'. These technologies – like pedal-driven blenders, bio-gas plants and compost toilets – have been evolving for decades, but have not received much attention from larger political movements.

A few characteristics set of "liberation technologies" that them apart.

First, liberation technologies are fundamentally within the control of the people.  Production and use firmly rests in the hand of people, thereby freeing them from dependency on multinational corporations and the global market economy.

Second, liberation technologies meet people’s needs easily. They are created from local resources and preserve the natural world, thereby eliminating challenges of extraction, transportation, and distribution.

Third, liberation technologies make use of human and renewable energies, which are available in abundance, sustainable and do not disturb the earth’s bio-physical limits.

Fourth, liberation technologies support 'closed loop cycles' – there is no toxic waste at the end of their lives. Rather, they are recyclable or compost-able by nature; their 'waste' is food for another part of the natural and human life cycle.
